Alright, since clearly no one has experience with UA mages before, I'll tell you my experience.
I currently have a level 75 UA f/p mage, linked from my mihile.
Notes: Flame Gear at level 50 is UBBER weak. like 1-2k DoT. at level 75 with maxed extreme magic, the DoT is about 3k. Compared to my level 7 poison mist, that does 5k.
Now, there IS currently a glitch with flame gear + poison mist stacking. The animations DO NOT stack. For example: If you cast poison mist and then flame gear, flame gear will not appear, and monsters will not recieve DoT from flame gear. If you cast flame gear then poison mist, the poison goes AROUND the gears. Thus, monsters only get flamed. The trick to allowing the two to stack is to stand right to the LEFT of a casted poison mist and use flame gear.

Personally, f/p is the best choice of a UA mage because of the extreme magic skill which buffs UAs. I/L's are utterly useless as a UA. Elemental Reset does NOT neutralize flame gear; flame gear will always do fire DoT. Problem with an I/L UA is that their freeze from ice strike causes a glitch with flame gear in which monsters become un-frozen or un-flamed.

In my opinion, if you REALLY want a UA mage, either F/P or priest. But honostly, may be better to choose another class.

Also, just as a side note: I/L and priest have the best hyper skills. F/P utterly sucks.

What other classes would make for a better choice of becoming a UA then? Also, don't I/L mages gain higher damage from comboing with fire and ice?

I/L mages don't get a a damage buff from that, it remains the same. If you thought of it in REAL elemental situation, fire melts ice, so ice damage would be neutralized.
I experienced UA f/p and shadower in KMS. Here's my personal ranking of usefulness of the UA skill: (not based on funding or anything else)
    1. Paladin
    2. Viper
    3. Night Lord
    4. Priest
    5. Ranger
    6. Shadower
    7. F/P
    8. Sniper
    9. I/L
    10. Dark Knight
    11. Hero
    12. Gunslinger

Paladin first because soul drive gets boosted in damage from holy charge. They can also elementally charge it to whatever elemental damage to do. Plus, they are getting buffed in the newest tespia patch. Viper second because it is the ultimate skill to charge energy. Night Lord next because vampire allows them to use no HP pots AT ALL. Priest because they're missing a DoT element and flame gear helps them a lot. Ranger because they're missing a horizontal attacking skill that mobs. Shadower for the same reason as a night lord. F/P because extreme magic boosts flame gear, however mist and gears sometimes won't stack. Sniper because the same reason as a ranger, except they already have horizontal attacking skills (iron arrow and snipe) I/L because well, already told you. Dark Knights only use soul drive until level 60, then it's COMPLETELY useless. Hero never needs to use it. Gunslinger has weak ass sharks because sharks gets its damage from str.

Ended up going with F/P UA. With my second Mihile, when I eventually get him to level 100, I'll be making a Paliden UA. Closing.
