    My Review on MS2

Before you continue, I'd just like to say I do acknowledge this game is in alpha. I may say some things I like or dislike or think is stupid, etc. Just remember, it's alpha.

Throughout this past few days, I had a blast playing MapleStory 2. I've had terrible doubts about this game despite seeing the game play trailer and other in-game action videos but yet I still was excited for it.

Of course, you start of in Maple Island. The tutorial is basic and gets you through the game.
To reach Victoria Island, you take a boat from Amherst. Yes, Southperry is dead (Though, I don't necessarily think it is. There's lots of data in the game referring to Southperry.)

The mechanics of the game feel like a very good successor to MapleStory 1. They're very fluid, you can customize it as you wish. Don't like playing with arrow keys? Don't worry, you can switch to WASD. You can adjust the volume of any aspect; your characters voice, ambiance, etc.

A while ago, Nexon stated to a user that they wish to keep the player interaction intact. This was probably one of the most liked feature of MapleStory 1. PQs brought people together, you had to team up with other people to fight bosses (pre-BB), so on and so forth.
    Fortunately, Nexon kept their word.

There is 3 mini games that happen every so often. Two require to be the last people standing and one required you to navigate yourself through a maze.

    Another big aspect was bosses.

Elite Bosses, like Baphomet, REQUIRES you to kill with other users. You need the firepower of several people otherwise you're going to be here all night. It's not meant to be solo'd.

There are, however, field bosses. These bosses are pretty solo-able but you don't get much rewards. That's a fair trade out.

I wasn't able to do dungeons unfortunately. But I'm sure with the new party limit of 10, it makes things a bit more fun.

Class, Combat, and HP/MP mechanics are interesting.
With many 3D MMOs, there's potion cooldowns. Though, there are some potions that don't have cooldowns, but they heal over time. Normally I hate MMOs that do this. It makes it feel like you're limited to what you can do and can't do. I'll admit sometimes I do feel limited, but not as much as other MMOs. Coming from MapleStory 1, all you really had to do most of the time was hold down one key and just spam potions. That's not the case in this prequel/sequel. There are bosses that can 2HKO you and sometimes even OHKO depending on the boss' attacks. You have to dodge and have some mobility. Some bosses like Griffon requires you to grab onto it. If you don't, it'll fly up in the air and attack a wide area which pretty much OHKOs you.

In MS2, MP is called SP. There are no SP potions (maybe there will be in the future). In order to gain SP, you have to use your basic class skill (Assassins use Lucky Seven, Wizards use Magic Claw, etc). Those skills do decent damage and don't require SP to use. This will let you gain SP per hit. In a way, it kind of sucks but it's different. I'm open to that. Maybe we'll see 2nd job skills that replace our 1st job basic skill. We'll see!

If you happen to die, which trust me it's a common thing, the place you died will have your tombstone. If someone breaks your tombstone, you'll be revived at that spot. If nobody decides to break your tombstone, you have to go back to the entrance of the map. Additionally, if you happen to die more than once within 300 seconds of your last death, your tombstone will become chained/black which means users cant revive you.
The only penalty of dying is 15% Max HP/MP deduction for 300 seconds. If you die multiple times, this debuff will stack. It can only stack up to 50% deduction.
In a game where field bosses can 2HKO you or the ability to fall off the maps, this is a good trade off. Can you imagine if you had EXP deduction for dying like you do in MS? You'd practically never level, bossing will be pointless for EXP, and potion cooldown would be your worst nightmare. In the end, this all ties up perfectly.

The user customization is probably the best selling points to MapleStory 2.
For years and years Maple 1 users have asked for a housing system. At least NSquare listened and added it! You start off with a free apartment that gives you a 3x3 land to customize on your own.
You are able to purchase in the future either:
    1. an apartment or
    2. land
Which ever you choose, they last for 30 days only
You can purchase either one in almost every map. There is more land/apartments located near town but you are free to buy some land in Ant Cave
An apartment is much cheaper but it's not really unique because you're sharing the same house with many other users
Once you save up enough mesos, you can buy yourself land. Land is really expensive, with 2x2 land costing 500k and 3x3 costing 1 million. In your land, you can either display stuff outside, or buy a building and put stuff inside.
My concerns about this is that 3x3 doesn't really give you much space. Sure, you can stack stuff, but you can't display much nature. Of course, if you buy a big building, you can decorate inside however you please. Some buildings give you 5x5 or the like. Maybe it's just me but I personally like having it bigger. I am hoping Nexon later on allows you to make rooms inside your house. That would be really neat!

Another concern is land limit. In Archeage, almost all land was taken by Day 2 of release/head-start. I saw a similar thing that occurred during Alpha Test. During the last day of alpha test, all users were given 5 million mesos to spend on their own. Because of this, I had a hard time finding land to purchase. I fear that this would be a terrible concern when this goes live. I do hope Nexon finds a solution because waiting and sniping after someone's land ends in 30 days doesn't seem to be ideal nor fun.

The other aspect of user customization is user generated content.

There are a lot of bulletin boards all over Maple World. Players can pay a small fee for their images to be put up. Users are free to put up whatever they wish. Though, of course, Nexon will take action if you decide to post something inappropriate.
Taking advertising to the next level, I guess.

Aside from bulletin boards, users can make their own designs for hats, gloves, shoes, you name it.

A few users had some really nice designs to give out. I really am looking forward to this and seeing what users can come up with.
Of course, the downside is some people will design trash giving the aesthetic appeal when walking through towns pretty low. I guess it's the price you pay for custom user content.

The other user customization was dungeons. Unfortunately, dungeon creation wasn't available this alpha.

Looking at the maps and mobs, I strongly feel that tons of those maps will not be how they are once it's officially released even perhaps beta.
For instance, Baphomet wasn't in the right place

Take a look at the surroundings of this image to the image I posted above with Baphomet.
I've explored all areas of the current Maple World in MS2 and no where did I see this snowy place.
Not to mention, the entrance to the Ant Cave is absurd and doesn't make much sense.
Some maps didn't make much sense either, because the map with Alpha & Giant Turtle had a shore but that map was north of Tria.

To simply put it, Nexon just added these bosses and maps just for the availability of the user. The real places are probably either not complete or above Lv. 25. Either way, I look forward to the real map.

And last but not least, the game itself. The game is beyond poorly optimized. As it stands, you practically need a computer that can handle Battlefield 4 with the highest settings to play seamlessly. My computer reaches the high to mid very high quality according to Nexon. Playing with High graphics, I get ton of lag spikes. In boss raids where there's over 40 people hitting simultaneously, I would have to turn my graphics down to Low and even then I'd get somewhere around 10 FPS. Personally, I'm glad Nexon made the decision to cap the amount of testers to 3k. I wouldn't want to imagine if they recruited 50k people.

I'm hoping before this game gets to the next test phase, Nexon optimizes and optimizes and optimizes this game until it can't be optimized no more.

Overall, I'm excited for this game. It really brings the old maple back. There's still plenty this game needs to be worked on, especially the grind.

Looks fucking great. Great fucking job, Nexon.

Also, what are your specs? Anyhow I suspect that the optimization is going to get better. I personally can't hope for anything with an FX-8320.

Wow, this makes me even more excited for MS2. Although I was excited before, I was still kind of iffy about it, but from what you've said, it has what I was hoping for, which is the old style of MS1 where it's a big community game and it's all about having fun with others. As for the problems with it you list it, those don't bother me too much (Except for the optimization) since for me all the customization and housing and etc. is all extra. I can't wait to be able to play MS2 with the Leafre guild and I'm sure our community will be amazing and make MS2 a great experience. Until they make it a solo game like with MS1 :P
    Click thanks, don't say it.

Thanks KremeChoco! I really enjoyed your streams!

I'm loving MapleStory 2 bringing back the communal aspect of pre-BB MS1. I really like the boss fight style and the classes. I hope they offer branching classes like they did with the original MS (Warrior -> Page, Spearman, or Fighter).

A thing I don't like about MS2 so far is the art style of the character (being needlessly sexualized - not even in a good way like League Of Legends). However, this is a minor thing. Just my two cents.

    Thanks again Kreme!

Yeah, it's open world. I believe there is a sort of equip upgrade system but it wasn't implemented in alpha test.
The camera angle cannot be adjusted beside zooming in and out. The zoom in is more from a bird's eye view to level of your character. You can see an example with the images I posted in the opening post.
